Product Description

Healthcare is now the number one industry for workplace violence, a statistic that nobody is proud of. As our society seems to become more and more violent, we continue to see more and more acts of violence against healthcare professionals. Seldom, however, does a person go from a state of calm to physically violent. More typically the aggressor will go through behavioral changes that lead to violence. And, unfortunately, many healthcare providers aren’t trained to recognize these changes until violence erupts!

In this session, Steve Wilder, a nationally recognized expert in healthcare safety and security will discuss the changes that a person goes through between a state of calm and a state of physically violent, including ways to recognize these changes and ways to defuse the aggression before it becomes violent.  Referred to as “the aggression continuum”, the program will look at the six common behavioral changes that the aggressor will go through, reliable telltale signs that the healthcare professional can rely on to recognize the behavioral changes, and proven deescalating steps for each level in the continuum. Based on the book by the same title and authored by the presenter, this aggression management program is now being used in healthcare facilities across the nation with proven results!

Learning Objectives:

  1. Identify the six behavioral changes a person typically goes through between calm and physically violent
  2. Identify at least two deescalating steps the healthcare professional can use for each level in the continuum
  3. Identify four methods of cornering that healthcare providers often make that inadvertently escalate the aggressor to a point of violence
  4. Understand the “triangle approach” to verbal de-escalation.
